On Wednesday, October 28, 2020, Mercer County’s One-Stop Career Center will be hosting a drive-thru job fair at the CURE Insurance Arena.

From 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., those in search of employment will have a chance to receive local hiring opportunities from the socially-distant safety of their personal vehicles.

“Part of what we do is bringing job seekers and employers together,” said Virgen Velez, Director of Mercer County’s One-Stop Career Center. “It’s what we do.”

Mercer County’s One-Stop Career Center has ran an annual job fair over the past two years. However, due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, the organization had to develop a new way of connecting those unemployed to the job market.

“We’d like to have a job fair, but under the current situation, we really can’t,” Velez said. However, after learning other organizations have successfully held drive-thru job fairs, Mercer County’s One-Stop Career Center realized it is still possible. “We thought we’d give it a try,” she said.

During the event, passerby’s will have the opportunity to connect with about 50 potential employers who are actively looking for new employees.

Velez said, “Oftentimes you go to a job fair, and then people are really just kind of giving information, but these are employers that actually have position available.”

This drive-thru job fair will operate through a simple system. Those attending will drive their vehicles up to the arena, with a required mask on, and will be directed by a sheriff’s officer as to where to drive.

Each participant will be handed a bag filled with flyers and information about the local hiring available. Every employer taking part in the job fair has supplied One-Stop with 500 flyers to be distributed at the event.

Although walk-ups are welcome, registration is encouraged. As of October 23, 2020, 675 people have registered for the Mercer County One-Stop Career Center drive-thru job fair.

There are a lot of job opportunities out there,” said Velez. “Just come out and get information on what is available.”
