Last Thursday, November 12, 2020, local legend Leon ‘Rain’ Rainbow unveiled the third mural in the COVID-19 inspired series “We Are Survivors.” The latest mural pays homage to the community members and essential workers who have supported the City of Trenton through the tough times of this global pandemic.

“The pandemic has given us a greater respect and understanding of what it means to be an essential worker,” said Rainbow. “Their service to the community makes all of our lives better.”

The “We Are Survivors” project arose when the pandemic hit the City of Trenton and began affecting residence. As Rainbow began to observe the changes in the way the city functions as a result of the virus, he used his passion for art as means of expression.

Rainbow said on his website, “The COVID-19 virus crisis is like nothing I have ever experienced, but I am grateful to have an outlet.” Part one of the project was when Rainbow started using his outlet of art to create the initial “We Are Survivors” mural. That mural is located on Clinton and Hudson Street.

Part two of the series was created on a wall of Sprout U School of the Arts located at 27 East Paul Avenue. The second piece highlights the way COVID-19 has challenged children in a school setting and their ways of adapting to the new virtual normalcy.

This newest third mural can be found at the intersection of Perry and North Broad Streets in Trenton. It has been described, quite literally, as a traffic stopper.

“Traffic slows down when they see this beautiful work,” says Leroy Nevius, who owns the building where the four-panel mural was created. “It enhances the building and has a positive impact on the neighborhood.”
